Checking out the Tour de Yorkshire Sportive Route

Pack action through Howarth

When they announced the Tour de Yorkshire Sportive was heading West, some locals were surprised that neither the Yorkshire Moors or Wolds were taking the limelight.  Neither featured in the 2014 Tour de France route and this created some grumbling amongst the cycling fraternity. We are happy to say that, whilst both the Moors and the Wolds still deserve their time in the sun, this 140 km, largely Pennines based long route  is a more than worthy choice.

All Terrain Cycles, which dates back to 1907 and has superstores near Bradford and in Wetherby, has announced that it will be one of the main sponsors of one of the region’s premier cycling events, Ripley Castle Cyclocross, which, following the success of the inaugural event last year, will again take place on New Year’s Day.

RIDE REVIEW -The Wolds 123

Let’s start this ride report at the end. Why? Well I’d say the last few miles of the Wolds 123 are just about as good as it gets for a sportive ending. The mild tail wind flattering us a little but the steady inclines do nothing to reduce us to anything below 20mph and with two separate sections that have no trouble spitting you out at well over 40mph, this is a great end to a great day in the saddle.

This story starts way back in 2012 on the same ride and about 45 miles or so in to what would eventually be a very long and ‘character building’ day. Poor pre ride nutrition and a pace far too hot to maintain resulted in the worst cramps I’ve experienced both before and since. Quads, Hams, Calves all painfully cramped on both legs to the point of seeing ‘worms’ constantly wriggling under the skin. Couldn’t stand, couldn’t sit, and with 60 miles of challenging terrain still left to navigate. Whilst the route that day left a positive impression on me, the experience didn’t so ever since then I’ve vowed to go back and give it another go.

As we’ve mentioned before, 2014 is apparently the year of the sportive with more than twice the amount of last year in and around North Yorkshire alone. Rather strangely this has coincided with a cut back in entered events for me personally as my focus has been on a more relaxed cycling schedule and just ‘getting out and enjoying a ride’  a bit more. One event however that has really appealed to me since first hearing about it is the inaugural Wolds 123 sportive organised by the guys over at Baldwin Titantium bikes.

Sportives – one to get on your list

With the sportive season officially well under way, like many of you, NYC have been planning which rides we want to do this year and which events will be our targets. Now of course everyone enters sportives with their own agenda, some to race, some to simply enjoy the days riding and any variation of that. Personally I tend to target a time I think will show significant progress but I also like to take in the ride, scenery and experience so don’t want to be literally chewing my stem for 6 hours straight (just the last hour or 2 will do).
